At Southeast Kentucky Behavioral Health (SEKYBH), we believe that preparing the next generation of helping professionals is an important part of strengthening our communities. We offer internship opportunities for educational and training purposes to eligible students who want to connect classroom learning with supervised, real-world experience in behavioral health and human services.
Our internships are designed to help students develop professional knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of ethical, person-centered care. Depending on the student’s academic program, educational level, learning objectives, qualifications, and the availability of appropriate supervision, an internship may include exposure to clinical services, assessment, counseling practices, case planning, community resources, outreach, documentation, and collaboration with other professionals.
A Supportive Place to Learn
Interns at SEKYBH learn in a professional environment that values compassion, respect, responsibility, confidentiality, and service to others. Each placement is structured around the intern’s educational goals and the requirements of the college, university, or approved training program.
Learning experiences may include:
– Observing qualified behavioral health and human-service professionals
– Learning about ethical practice, confidentiality, and professional boundaries
– Developing communication, documentation, and organizational skills
– Gaining a better understanding of counseling, assessment, and care planning
– Becoming familiar with case management and community resources
– Participating in community outreach and educational activities
– Receiving constructive feedback and appropriate professional supervision
Interns are never expected to perform duties outside their level of education, training, supervision, or authorization. Specific responsibilities vary by placement and are determined before the internship begins.
Who Should Inquire?
Internship opportunities may be appropriate for students enrolled in programs such as social work, counseling, psychology, human services, case management, behavioral health, community health, or related fields. Undergraduate, graduate, practicum, and field-placement inquiries may be considered when SEKYBH has the staff, setting, and supervision necessary to support a meaningful educational experience.
Because every academic program has different requirements, placement opportunities are reviewed individually. The availability of an internship is not guaranteed and may vary according to current programs, supervision capacity, scheduling, student qualifications, and school requirements.
What to Expect
Students selected for an internship can expect a structured learning experience that may include orientation, clearly defined responsibilities, regular feedback, and supervision appropriate to the placement. Interns must follow all SEKYBH policies and applicable school or training-program requirements, including standards related to confidentiality, professional conduct, attendance, documentation, safety, and client privacy.
Additional screening, documentation, agreements, or training may be required before a placement can begin. Internships are educational experiences and do not guarantee future employment with SEKYBH.
