Listening to understand means you are trying to truly hear what your partner feels and needs—even if you do not fully agree. This kind of listening builds trust, safety, and connection in marriage.

When someone listens to win, they are:

  • planning what to say next
  • defending themselves
  • trying to prove they are right
  • pointing out mistakes

  • focused on the other person
  • trying to understand feelings
  • asking questions instead of accusing
  • showing care and respect
